A "slice" is a collection of highly programmable resources---including segments of networks and virtual machines---within a globally distributed research environment. The Slice Around the World project has been able to show that we can now support a new breed of applications that could be part of our everyday lives someday soon!

Given the infrastructure and expertise here at UVic, our team was able to lead the way for reserachers at Canadian Unviersities using high-capacity networks provided by CANAIRE and BCNET and software to dynamically direct high-volume data streams. These OpenFlow-based networks, integrated with cloud technology, means that everyone, everywhere, may sometime soon be faced with the question... what will you do with your supercomputer?
