  • The room for both review sessions will be Ell 160.  Thursday from 11:30-12:30 and Friday from 12:30 - 1:30. 
  • Office hours this week:
    • Wednesday:  11:30-12:30 (but try other times, if my light is on -- knock -- if I'm in the middle of something I'll let you know)
    • Friday:  Immediately after the review session

  • Assignment #4 due date has been changed ... it is now due on Thurs Nov. 28th -- but you are strongly advised to work with your partner on this assignment before the third midterm (consider this as good use of your time with respect to studying for the midterm too!).  I also added some more tips to the assignment....
  • Notes from today's lecture on Dictionaries and Hashing have been added to the site.
  • I also uploaded the code examples from Monday (pair programming exercises)
  • The link for the cool animation applet on hashing we saw today is:

  • Assignment #4 has been posted and is due in 2 weeks.
  • Note you need to find a partner for this assignment -- attend the labs or post on the web board -- you must have a partner by Friday at the latest.
  • Attending the labs is crucial this week to understand the background material for this assignment.

  • Midterm 2 is on Monday Oct 28th in class.  It is a closed book, closed notes, no calculators exam.  A list of the topics and readings to focus on are posted here.
  • Review exercise:  I posted the program from today's class.  Here is the code (note there are tips in there of possible midterm questions!):
  • I will have extra office hours on Monday as follows:  11:30-1:30 in EOW 313.

  • Reminders:  no class on Oct 21st.  Assignment 2 is due electronically by 6pm on Oct 22nd (Tuesday), printouts due on Wednesday in class.  Part A will be done in your labs next week.
  • We will go over another example from analysis of algorithms on Wednesday 16th Oct (read Chapter 3 if you have not already done so!)
  • We will start discussing trees on Wednesday also (start reading Chapter 6)
  • On Thursday we will cover Vectors and Sequences (see Chapter 5, previously assigned -- if you have not read it catch up by reading it now) , as well as discuss Design Patterns in more depth (they were introduced during the first week of the course).

  • Electronic submission of assignment #1 is  here. Due at 15:30 Sept 23/2002
  • You must also hand in a copy version during class on Monday (if you can't attend class give it to a classmate to drop it off during class). 
  • As per the course outline, late assignments are not accepted.  Hand in what you have completed by the due dates given.

  • Assignment #1, updated Sept 13/2002.   Parts in red have been changed.  In particular, we changed the hint code for the win calculation, and added a bonus challenge to the assignment.

  • Labs start this week!  Attend the section you signed up for.
  • We have a discussion board for our class!  This is to be used as a forum for students to post questions about assignments and midterms.  We will monitor it and post answers.  Students need to have a netlink id and password to access the board.  All of uvic's webboards are found at http://webboard.uvic.ca. If you have questions about the webboard, please bring them to the lab.
  • Textpad is a simple programming environment that is supported by the consultants office, it can be downloaded from www.textpad.com .  The environment I have been using in class is available for free download from www.eclipse.org
