New Year Greeting 2009

Nerdy New Year Greeting Details:

This is a rendering of a 4-Venn diagram which has some nice symmetries on the sphere. Each of the tubes represents a curve of the diagram. Imagine a pole passing through the two points where all 4 curves intersect. The underlying isometry is a rotary reflection of angle pi/4 with respect to that pole. A *.pov file was created using Maple and then the central glass sphere and the lettering added for input to a ray-tracer. Based on a Venn diagram discovered by my student, Mark Weston.
