User Profile - Shane
No Experience with Computers
User's Scenario Shane is a Sales Associate at a music store in Calgary. He uses a computer at work to run the POS (point-of-sale) program and that is it. Shane is very well immersed with using the POS program, and can use just about all of the features in the program. The POS program that Shane uses, runs on Windows 2000, but the POS program is always running, and hides to OS in the background (Shane has been told this, but does not know what this means.) The POS program only requires Shane to interact with the POS program and nothing else. The POS program is very basic, and uses a lot of GUI, with clear labels, so Shane always knows what to do, and finds it easy to work with (example: Press F5 to enter a sale, Press F10 to search for a product, and all of these are represented with images.) Shane always gets worried when he is working by himself, because he is afraid that something will go wrong with the computer, and will require him to reboot the system, which he does not know how to do very well. Shane who just finished High School last year, and has moved away from home, is currently living by himself, and works at the music store. He never took any sort of Computer/Technology courses in high school, and instead took a lot of music classes. Shane owns a computer at his apartment, but only uses it to listen to music. A friend created for him a shortcut on the desktop called "Music" so Shane knows how too easily find and play his music. He relates the opening of the CD drive on the computer to the opening and close of a CD drive on a stereo. Shane always leaves his computer on, so that he does not have to worry about turning it on and off (he has trouble turning the computer off, because is confused between the differences of "Log Off", "Turn of My Computer", "Stand By" and "Reset.") Shane as you can tell knows very little about computers, and is afraid of the technology. Shane is the type of person, who will call a friend up for help, because he does not know how to save a file, and easily gets frustrate and calls his friend back up later because he cannot find the file that he had saved. Shane works five days a week, from 9am-6pm. He usually does not have time for breakfast, or if he does, he has a quick bowel of cereal. For lunch, Shane usually eats some fast food. When Shane gets home each day around 7pm, he is usually "beat" but hungry. Once Shane is inside his house, he starts to play music from his computer, and starts making dinner. Since Shane is usually quiet tired from working all day, he usually makes the first thing that he can think off, which usually results in him eating the same meal 3-4 times a week, and Shane starts to get tired of the same old food. Shane usually watches television after dinner at 8pm, and then goes to bed. Shane is one of those people who only has a television, and no VCR, because this way there is only one remote, and there is no VCR that needs programming this way. Usually Shane will make himself "better/more advanced" meals twice a week on the days he has off from work, since he is not as tired when he makes dinner, and because he goes shopping for food at the grocery store on one of those two days he has off of work. Usually when shopping Shane is one of those people, that will see something he think he may like and buys it for dinner that night, and for later in the week as well. By the time work comes around a few days later, he is too tired to remember what he bought for dinner on his day off, and he usually ends up not noticing the food again until the next week, and some times by then, the food is spoiled, and results in Shane having to by more food. |
