I was born in Manchester, in England, though I was
brought up in Norfolk on the east coast, watching the storms blow across
the North Sea. I went to the University of Nottingham for both my
Bachelors and doctoral degrees, before coming to North America, and the
University of Manitoba in 1969. After 13 years there, I decided I had
had enough of the cold (and the mosquitoes) so moved to Victoria in 1982
and have been here ever since.
My personal interests include motor racing (that I watch) and
running (which I do - and will continue, at least as long as my
knee holds up). I enjoy reading an eclectic range of books (and am
running out of space at home for more books), as well as art and
