Here are six sample users with pictures we stole from The Onion.
Rita is based in Vancouver, but spends a lot of time in other towns. When she gets home, there always seems to be something in the fridge that's about to go off. She loves to cook, but doesn't spend much time on computers. She uses computers sometimes at work, and addicted to email, but her experience doesn't go far beyond that.
Fred is a student living in cluster at UVic, and met a girl in his psychology elective. He can't really afford to take girls out to dinner, so in a moment of idiocy, he offered to make her dinner. Having already promised chicken, he now has to come up with something he can make. His computer is in the living room, so he doesn't need to print things out, but he really doesn't know a broil from a bake, and will need to be able to get more information than a normal recipe provides.
Alice has lots of spare time to dedicate to the recipe database. She loves the feeling of importance it gives her to know she is contributing to something many people use, and is a respected member of the community. She loves the feeling that other people watch her user profile to see what she cooks, and what she thought of the recipe, and spends time every day reading over entries in the site to eliminate duplicates or suggest improvements.
Eustace enjoys cooking, but isn't very serious about it. He uses the database as an alternative to paper cookbooks. He likes the fact that he can always find something good to can make with what he has - the ratings are very trustworthy. His company has provided him with a PDA which he loads with whatever recipes he is making for dinner that night. After he finishes the recipe, sometimes he logs in and rates it.
Colm used to run a successful restaurant in Belfast before he had a compelling reason to stay out of business. Although he no longer cooks professionally, he doesn't want his recipes to go to waste. He is gradually submitting his recipes to the database, one at a time, and linking them together as he goes with suggestions about good combinations with other recipes he has tried in the system.
When not analyzing systems, Kert likes to sit at home behind his multiple monitor setup. Kert is willing to spend hours on setup to get a system set up just how he likes and make it more efficient in the long run. Kert has random items prepared in his refrigerator such as diced onions and jalepenos, since he loves both items and puts them in almost everything he eats. Kert prefers spicy food, especially Thai, Asian, East Indian and Mexican, and particularly quick recpies. When he searches for a recipe he wants those items to come up first every time.
