    • Tips for installing software for assignment #3:
      • Some help if you are having difficulty installing Ontoviz (these instructions are from Neil Ernst, thanks Neil):

        1. Download the file from the plugins page of protege.stanford.edu.
        2. Extract it to a temporary folder.
        3. Copy ontoviz.jar and grapppa1_2.jar to ..\protege-2000\plugins\ (the
        directory protege is installed)
        4. Run the gv176b1.exe file to some directory: typically c:\program
        files\att
        5. Go to your protege directory again, probably c:\program
        files\protege-2000 and edit the protege.properties file with a text
        editor.
        6. Add these lines at the end:
        dot.fontsize=-2
        mainframe.rectangle=81\ 95\ 918\ 616
        dot.font=Arial
        dot.command=C\:\\Program\ Files\\att\\graphviz\\bin\\dot <- this should
        be the complete path to dot(.exe)
        (note: the double backslash is important)
        7. open Protégé, load a project, then select Project->Configure and
        place a check in the Ontoviz box.
        8. Go to the ontoviz tab, and click the C button in that tab - this
        should display a graph of the entire ontology.
        More details are available in the zip file you downloaded under
        readme.txt about the plethora of options.

      • The visual attribute explorer works better with Java 1.3
      • The visual attribute tool has also been installed in the lab as follows (these directions are from the seng system administrator):

        The software is installed on the following A321 machines: awin01, awin04,
        awin11, awin15.

        To make it work, these steps must be taken:
        click START, RUN, CMD
        change to d:\temp\AttributeExplorer\bin
        type "set path = %path%;d:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin;"
        (it recommends 1.3, but 1.4 seems to work ok)
        type "vae ..\samples\house.csv"
        all going well, a nice gui chart should show up.

  • January 22nd, 2003
    • Workshop presenters and discussants have been posted. Please check emails are correct, and assignments are correct!  See the schedule page.
    • More details on the workshop process will be discussed in class tomorrow.  See here for an overview.
    • For assignment #3, we have a new version of Jambalaya ready to release, it is much easier to learn/use than the last version.
      Jambalaya release 1.6 is posted at: www.cs.uvic.ca/~rlintern/shrimp/jambalaya/jambalaya_release_1_6.zip  ***Note: This is to uzipped into the "Protege-2000/" directory, NOT the "Protege-2000/plugins" directory. The reason for this is that it includes a "properties" file to specify default colors etc.
    • Don't forget to start on the readings, as there are a lot!
    • Some new links have been added to our links page that were advertised on our webboard.
    • Notes on trees and networks have been posted for tomorrow (see notes pages for 6up file)

    • Re Assignment #1:  Not e -- you do not have to select a tool that provides interactive visualizations, simply choose a tool that allows you to create and interact (transform) some graphical kind of information (that is representation that uses more than words).
    • Re textbook:  The bookstore is out of them apparently.  Please try to borrow a friends' book,  I will place a copy of the reading for assignment #1 on my door.   You may borrow it to photocopy and then return it.   I have placed a copy of the book on reserve (in the library) but apparently it will take a few days before it appears there.  Amazon has copies and have free shipping too as an option as the bookstore will take a few days to get a book in.
